TOPEKA — The legislative session began Monday afternoon in Topeka. The Kansas Information Network reported that rural and urban legislators are already skirmishing over one touchy topic likely to be one of the top issues – redistricting. An interim panel’s recommendation that allows legislative districts to vary by as much as five percent has drawn the ire of Rep. Anthony Brown, R-Eudora, who represents the fastest-growing district, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The recommendation is unfair to urban voters and allows rural legislators to wield more influence than warranted. Supporters say the recommendation prevents cities and counties from being unnecessarily divided among districts.
