WOLF CREEK — Workers at the Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant continue to investigate the cause of a failure which caused the plant to issue a “notification of an unusual event” Thursday. Once repairs are completed, operators will restart the plant. On Thursday afternoon, the plant automatically shut down because the it lost power because of a failure in the plant’s electrical distribution system. Both of the plant’s emergency diesel generators automatically started, supplying power to safety-related equipment. Wolf Creek ended the emergency notification Thursday evening. A notification of unusual event is the least serious of four emergency classifications according to to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Wolf Creek’s owners, Kansas City Power & Light, Westar Energy, and Kansas Electric Power Cooperative; are using their other generating facilities or are buying power while Wolf Creek is shut down.
