GARNETT — A Garnett business owner tells the Anderson County Review that he will continue to push to reopen a railroad crossing on Pine Street next to his auto-repair garage, despite facing an uphill battle. Jere Setter of Garnett has complained to Garnett city commissioners about drivers using his driveway as a shortcut between Fifth and Sixth streets. The problem didn’t exist until 2007, when the city allowed Union Pacific Railroad to close three crossings at Pine, Spruce and Cedar streets, he said. The city put up barricades at his driveway but setter said that hasn’t helped. Setter wants the city to reopen the crossing and to force the issue with the railroad. Setter said he’s willing to go to court. City manager Joyce Martin said it’s unlikely that the railroad will agree to reopen the crossing.
