OTTAWA — Ottawa city commissioners ignored a recommendation Wednesday night by the city staff to issue a demolition permit for the former Hometown Computers building, 124 S. Main St. Prior to the commission vote, City planning and codes director Wynndee Lee said the condition of the building is such that’s there’s no alternative but to demolish it without delay. However, city commissioners voted unanimously not to issue a permit that allowed a complete demolition. Commissioners said they believe although part of the historic building needs to come down, they say they want to see if if’s feasible the first floor and basement can be saved. Taking down the building completely poses it’s own hazards, they said. They voted after a public hearing lasting longer than an hour with several people testifying. A Kansas City bank owns the building as a result of a foreclosure and originally sought the demolition permit.
