JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – A St. Louis-area state senator seeks to dissolve the troubled Kansas City school district and divide the students among neighboring public schools and private schools. Kansas City officials have been busy trying to kill Sen. Jane Cunningham’s bill. She told the Kansas City Star that the schools have failed the community and students and a drastic change is needed. Interim Kansas City school superintendent Steve Green said since the school system lost its accreditation last month, the schools have shown strong progress but need more time. Cunningham’s critics said her bill does nothing to deal with the poverty and family problems that many Kansas City students have to deal with. The bill is making neighboring school districts nervous. Many legislative leaders say the bill has little chance.
