PUNXSATAWNEY, Pa. — Today is Groundhog Day and people have been gathering at Gobblers Knob in Punxsatawney, Pa., for the annual rodent ritual involving groundhog Punxsatawney Phil’s annual weather prognostication, which is for six more weeks of winter. Kansas state climatologist Mary Knapp said there is a lot of folklore associated with Groundhog Day. Besides the “six weeks more” legend, Kansas farmers were aware of the folklore of “Groundhog Day, half your hay,” she said. Feb. 2 is still mid-way through the winter in Kansas and the saying was useful to remind farmers they still lots of hay for their livestock to last through the winter.
