LAWRENCE — A University of Kansas researcher teamed up scientists from China and the United Kingdom to play it again, Sam. KU ecology and evolutionary biology professor Michael Engel and the others used a computer to replay what may be the world’s oldest love song – of a Jurassic-era katydid that lived 165 million years ago. Using a well-preserved fossil of the old bug found in china, the researchers replicated the insect’s mating call, which was produced rubbing together its musical wing parts. The team used computers to analyze and model the katydid’s wings and recreate the sounds electronically. The katydid wanted to attract the lady bugs, bu not a prehistoric frog or lizard with something else besides love in mind, Engel said.
