TOPEKA — Gov. Sam Brownback and legislators have been on the defensive about a series of dinners in which they discussed brownback’s legislative proposals behind closed doors. Critics have accused them of violating the Kansas Open Meetings Act.
Shawnee County district attorney Chad Taylor, a Democrat, has been investigating the gatherings. However, Kansas Information Network reported Republican legislative leaders have gone on the offensive against Taylor’s investigation, saying that because of protections in the Kansas Constitution and state law, he can’t force legislators to provide information. However, House Speaker Mike O’Neal said he’ll voluntarily disclose information and he urged other legislators to follow suit.
