WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, of Missouri, is trying to add a change that will keep rural post offices open and maintain six-day mail delivery for at least the next four years. McCaskill is trying to amend the 21st Century Postal Service Act, which was designed to fix the U.S. Postal Service’s revenue problems. She told the Associated Press that post offices are important to the small communities they serve. The postal service said it will lose a record $14.1 billion this year. However, the service’s plan to close 252 mail processing centers and 3,700 local post offices, and go to five-day mail delivery has drawn strong opposition from Congress.
