OTTAWA – Franklin County Commissioners issued a special-use permit Wednesday to Ottawa Co-op to install two large anhydrous ammonia tanks near Texas and Reno roads southwest of Wellsville. The Franklin County Planning Commission recommended that the permit be approved after hold a public hearing on the request, Larry Walrod, county planning director, said. Neighbors who attended the hearing voiced concerns about increased traffic, dust and the possibility of ammonia leaks, he said. The Co-op already uses the site for agricultural purposes and has the appropriate water, electricity and security to safeguard the tanks, Walrod said. The Co-op had sought to add the tanks to the site because the Co-op has had difficulty in keeping up with the increase demand for the fertilizer, he said.
