WICHITA — The search for a site for a new Wichita library could mean more than the fountain of knowledge. Try a gusher of oil. The Wichita Eagle reported that the city may do some drilling on the proposed downtown library site next to the Arkansas River before they do core samples. Experts say there may be “significant” oil deposits under the site. In the past, the city of Wichita has owned and operated oil wells in the area along the river. The Eagle saID that although city regulations make it difficult today to drill for oil inside the city limits, city council members say they want to know how much oil is there and if there is, they’re flexible. They also say they’ll build a library on the site – eventually.
