TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Transportation has approved about $34 million in highway improvements related to the controversial Burlington Northern Santa Fe intermodal center between Gardner and Edgerton. KDOT announced five separate contracts for new construction and improvements relating to the intermodal center, which is now under construction. Clarkson Construction Co., Kansas City, received four of the contracts, which make up most of the money awarded. Clarkson will build a new interchange construction on I-35 at Homestead Lane, as well as install an Intelligent Transportation System of signals and sensors designed to handle heavier concentrations of traffic at the new intersection, and improvements to one mile of Homestead Lane between 199th Street and 19th Street, and improvements to 191st Street between Four Corners Road and Gardner Road. Another company would improve U.S. 56 between Center Street in Gardner to the junction of I-35.
