OTTAWA — An airplane that flew in World War II and the Berlin Airlift could soon land at a Kansas City food establishment. Dodson Aviation’s Bob Dodson said restauranteur Danny O’Neill has made a down-payment on a 1943 twin-engine DC-3 cargo airplane now parked at Ottawa Municipal Airport. O’Neill plans to permanently display the plane at the Roasterie Coffee Company. The coffee company’s logo features a DC-3 in flight. Dodson said he got the plane as part of a trade-in by the state of Florida, which used the plane as an aerial mosquito sprayer. The plane was also used by the South African Air Force. The DC-3, called a C-47 by the U.S. Army Air Corps, is regarded as one of the most important airplanes of World War II. Dodson said despite their advanced age, DC-3s are still flying and with proper maintenance, still remain some of the best planes flying.
