GARNETT – Area Boy Scouts learned rule one of survival this weekend during the Twin Rivers Scout District’s Klondike Derby at Lake Garnett. During a disaster, check a woman’s purse. The Anderson County Review reported that as part of a disaster survival exercise, Scouts from Anderson, Franklin, Miami and Linn counties had to pick through an area where about 25 common items were scattered and told to find the 10 most useful survival items. Garnett Eagle Scout Wes Ahring organized the survival challenge and said although most men won’t touch a woman’s purse but women put a wide variety of items in their purse that can be handy during a disaster. The Klondike Derby is the district’s annual winter campout. Ahring said many Boy Scouts pick the purse – but only after a lengthy discussion.
