GARNETT — The Garnett Recreation Center will expand its hours. The center will open an hour earlier, at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday, effective March 1. City manager Joyce Martin told the Anderson County Review that the city has heard more requests for longer hours at the facility as more people use it. Memberships to the center grew by 80 percent in January, and revenue was up 44 percent in January, primarily because of that membership increase, Martin said. She said daily use fees fell in January, but could be a result of college and high school students, who are the most common day users, returning to classes. The recreation center opened nearly one year ago in the former Kansas Army National Guard armory. Using $131,000 donated by the Goppert Foundation, the facility was remodeled to include a basketball court, walking track and wellness center with exercise equipment.
