HARVEYVILLE — Franklin County emergency management director Alan Radcliffe has been on one of the state’s emergency teams working in Harveyville since early Wednesday morning. Radcliffe, who was serving as incident team leader, also served on a state emergency team in the aftermath of the tornado that destroyed Reading. The tornado that hit Harveyville made a three-block-wide swath through the southern side of the town and didn’t do as much damage as the Reading tornado, which destroyed nearly of the town, he said. The team coordinated its efforts with local government officials and helped residents assess the damage to their property, he said. The team will also coordinate the effort of volunteers, who were to be shuttled into town from Eskridge beginning this afternoon, he said. The state said one man who was injured in the tornado, Richard D. Slade, has died of his injuries. At least 13 people were injured and more than 40 percent of the town’s homes and buildings were destroyed or damaged. The state said those people wishing to volunteer in Harveyville need to report to Mission Valley High School at Eskridge, and will be shuttled by bus to Harveyville. Teams of Salvation Army and Red Cross are also working at Harveyville. Both the Salvation Army and Red Cross say they’re accepting financial contributions for relief efforts there. The Red Cross also said it needs donations of commercially prepared food from restaurants and other commercial providers continue to be a need, as well.
