PAOLA — A Miami County jailer has been charged in Miami County District Court with two counts of mistreatment of a confined person and two counts of battery. Kansas City’s Fox 4 News reported Dennis Roberts, 63, Wellsville, is accused of beating two Miami County jail inmates in December 2009 and January 2010. A retired Kansas City, Kan. police sergeant, Roberts worked five years as a Miami County jailer. Roberts resigned Feb. 24 after he was booked into the Franklin County jail and was freed on bond. He’ll make his first court appearance in Miami County District Court next Thursday. The Miami County Sheriff’s office told Fox 4 News that until his resignation, Roberts was on administrative leave since Jan. 5.
