OTTAWA – Beginning this morning, the Ottawa Police Department started looking for high school students who aren’t wearing seat belts.  The extra patrolling is part of a statewide effort to get teen drivers and their passengers to buckle up.  Ottawa Lt. Adam Weingartner says that in 2010, 51 teens were killed in car crashes in kansas and 75 percent of those killed weren’t wearing seatbelts. For more than 20 years, officers have educated and warned passengers and drivers about the importance of using seat belts. Officers will also keep an eye out for those drivers who are texting, Weingartner said.
