TOPEKA – The deadline to apply for energy help through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program is March 30. The Kansas Eepartment of Social and Rehabilitation Services said applications must be received in the LIEAP processing center or a SRS office by close of business on March 30th.
LIEAP provides money to help qualifying households pay their winter heating bills. Most of those who receive help are people with disabilities, the elderly and poor families with children. An average benefit of $263 will be received by the 40,095 cases processed so far this season. Guidelines, qualifications, or applications are available at local SRS offices or by calling toll-free 1-800-432-0043. Visit the Web-site www.srs.ks.gov to apply on-line. To qualify, applicants must be responsible for direct payment of their heating bills. Income eligibility guidelines are set at 130 percent of the federal poverty level. For example, to qualify, the maximum income for one person is $1,180 per month, and $2,422 per month for a family of four.
