COUNCIL GROVE — Steve Schmidt will present “Santa Fe Trail History 101” in the first presentation Sunday of the Kaw Councils program series at the Kaw Mission State Historic Site in Council Grove. Schmidt, president of the Cottonwood Crossing Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association and will speak Sunday afternoon at 2. He will describe the political and economic forces that gave birth to the Santa Fe Trail, which goes from Independence, Mo., through Osage County to New Mexico. The history of the trail can be divided into three distinct periods, he said, and which he’ll also discuss. The regular admission fee of $3 for adults and $1 for children applies.
