GARNETT — A mild winter could end up as a tough spring for farmers and gardeners who will have to battle with weeds this year. Anderson County Extension agent Shannon Blocker told the Anderson County Review that the warm temperatures over the winter months and into the early spring allowed for early germination of many plants, flowers, trees and weeds. Farmers and gardeners will have to start their anti-weed effort early and often this spring, she said. It’s too early to tell if the mild winter means a wild summer because of insects, Blocker said. Although it doesn’t necessarily mean more insects it does mean they’ll be here earlier, she said.
