COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Columbia, S.C., State and several Kansas news outlets are reporting that the University of South Carolina has offered the Gamecocks’ head coaching job to Kansas State basketball coach Frank Martin. They also report that Martin will accept, although that has been downplayed by Martin’s agent. The South Carolina newspaper says university trustees have scheduled a special meeting Tuesday morning to discuss personnel, and the paper said it’s expected Martin will be introduced as the Gamecocks’ head coach after that. After Bob Huggins suddenly left K-State after a year, K-State took a chance on Martin who was his assistant, and had not been a head coach of a college team. Martin rebuilt the Wildcats’ basketball program into a national power. Some area newspapers have speculated that Martin has been at odds with athletic director John Currie over the sudden disqualification of Jamar Samuels during the NCAA tournament and over Martin’s salary.
