LYNDON — Osage County Attorney Brandon Jones has ruled that the Lyndon school board violated the Kansas Open Meetings Act by failing to notify the public about a special meeting held in January. The Osage County Herald-Chronicle reported that Jones upheld two complaints concerning the Jan. 27 meeting, one by the newspaper and one by district patron Johnnie Vvosseller. The meeting lasted five minutes. The board accepted the resignation of Lyndon elementary-middle school principal Jeff Kohlman, who was named superintendent of Chase County USD 284. Jones said the Herald-Chronicle and Vosseller had specifically requested to be notified of all meetings – a key requirement of the open meetings law — and that the school district had failed to do so in the case of the special meeting. Rather than fine board members, Jones told the paper he’ll require that the board receive training on the provisions of the open meetings law. The board is expected to accept the deal at their next meeting.
