OTTAWA — Pomona voters will decide the fate today of two former mayors who want on the city council. As mayor, Joann Hancock, filed a lawsuit against the city council and was later recalled by Pomona voters. She’s running for the council, as is another former mayor, Kirk Lauritsen. Other candidates seeking one of three city council seats include two city council incumbents – Richard Adler and Rick Smith – and Carole Hopkins, Bill Lloyd, Lindsay Meyer, Jerry Slavens and Scott Snethen. In Garnett, four men are running for the one Garnett City Commission seat up for election today. Mayor Mike Norman – the mayor’s position is ceremonial and is rotated among the three commissioners — is being challenged by Randy Kennard, Mark Magner, and Preston Peine. Four incumbents are on the Osawatomie city council ballot today but voters will only have one choice unless they want to write someone in. The only one contest for the city council is Ward Four. Incumbent Tamara Maichel is being challenged by Nick Hampson and Christopher Klein.
Other incumbents have no opponents on the ballot. The only other contested race for Miami County is for Louisburg mayor, which features Curt Schreckengaust and Travis Thomas. Council races in Louisburg are uncontested, as are two Paola city council races. In Osage County, voters in the Osage City school district are voting on a proposed $6.8 million bond issue. By wrapping the bond issue around expiring bonds, the bond issue would mean an increase of about three mills for property taxpayers. The proposal would remodel the Osage City Elementary School and convert the elementary gym into a fitness center, build a combination gym and storm shelter, make improvements to the middle school gym, and improvements to the high school track and football field. KOFO will broadcast election results live tonight on KOFO 1220 Country and KMXN 92.9 FM HD-2 and on the Web site and on Facebook.
