OTTAWA — Franklin County deputies were alerted to a traffic accident involving a pickup occurring on K-68 west of Pomona Monday evening. Officers responding to the accident were startled to see the bashed-up pickup, tailgate dragging and wheels wobbling, roar past them, heading to Ottawa at high rate of speed, which resulted in a chase through the mean streets of Ottawa. William Rowe, 45, Council Bluffs, Iowa, was driving east on K-68 when he fell asleep and rolled his truck at about Arkansas Road, Deputy Jarod Fredricks said. The vehicle landed on its wheels — so he drove away. Deputies tried to stop him at K-68 and Eisenhower Road but he made it through the road block and kept on trucking – leading officers through western Ottawa, Fredricks said. At about 13th and Olive, the driver leaped out of the truck and took off on foot, with officers in hot pursuit, he said. Fredricks said the foot race didn’t last long. Rowe was booked into the jail on DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.
