PEA RIDGE, Ark. – A little more than 150 years ago,  one of the largest and most significant Civil War battles west of the Mississippi river was fought between Union and Confederate forces at Pea Ridge in northwestern Arkansas. Several area Kansas units took part in the battle. Grady Atwater, curator of the John Brown State Historical Site in Osawatomie, said the battle had a huge impact on Kansas and Missouri, keeping Missouri firmly in the Union and virtually eliminating the Confederacy as a major factor west of the Mississippi. The battle is the focus of this Sunday morning’s Community Perspective at 8:04.
