WASHINGTON — Today is April 17th – deadline day for filing your federal taxes, two days later than usual. What do you do if you have not done the paperwork yet or waited until the last minute to get the paperwork together? If you need more time to file that’s OK. “They should absolutely take their time,” tax accountant Janice Hayman told ABC News. “File that extension.” Many people feel frazzled right now, but they shouldn’t feel the need to be, she said. Filing the extension, either by mailing Form 4868 or on the IRS’s Web site at the FreeFile tab, gives taxpayers another six months. Although you can file an extension to file your return, if you owe money, you still have to pay by today or least pay part of what you owe to avoid some penalties and interest, she said. As for finding someone to answer your last minute questions — good luck, she said. “It’s very hard right now to get somebody who’s coherent,” Hayman said. IRS phone lines may be jammed, she said.
