OTTAWA — When the new Franklin County juvenile detention center opens in about a month, the center will include a new day school. The school will be for those in the center and for juveniles ordered to go to show up at the day school. Juvenile justice director Ethel Wallace said she’s been working with Ottawa School Supt. Dean Katt to set up the school and ensure lessons track with USD 290’s curriculum. The day school will make it easier for juveniles in the center to transition into the community, while ensuring that students don’t fall behind. In beginning, all of the students in the day school will be from USD 290 schools, she said. Construction on the center is nearly complete and Wallace said her staff is now doing the hard part – filling out all the paperwork.
