MINE CREEK — Hardtack and hard times will be the focus of the presentation “Hardtack and Johnny Cakes: The Food of the Civil War Soldiers,” 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site. Cooking demonstrations will show how Union hardtack, which was similar to a large cracker, was mixed, kneaded, and spread before baking; and how Confederate johnny cakes were made. Samples of each will be offered for tasting, followed by a discussion of other foods found in Civil War camps. Admission to the site is $5 for adults, $1 for students. Kansas Historical Foundation members and children five and under are admitted free. Mine Creek Battlefield, site of the largest cavalry charge of the war and which virtually destroyed Confederate Gen. Sterling Price’s force, is on K-52 east of Mound City.
