LAWRENCE – The Douglas County Sheriff’s office is accepting applications to for the third annual Citizens’ Academy. The academy begins in August and ends Oct. 4. Classes meet every Thursday evening from 5:30 to 9:30, with two Saturday sessions. Applicants must be Douglas County residents 18 years of age or older. Applications are available at the Douglas County judicial and law enforcement center in Lawrence or on-line at  www.dgso.org. Select “services” from the main menu, then “citizen’s academy.” Applications are due by Monday morning at 8, June 1. The sheriff’s office Citizens’ Academy is designed to teach people about the duties and responsibilities of the sheriff’s office and will receive classroom and hands-on instruction about the corrections and operations divisions, accident investigation, field sobriety testing, building searches, drug recognition, patrol driving, and firearms.
