LAWRENCE – If you’re an investor looking for good stocks to pick, researchers from the University of Kansas and the University of Minnesota suggest that you might want to stay away from companies that make large political contributions. KU professor of business finance Felix Meschke says the study indicates that large corporations that play politics and make big campaign contributions consistently have fewer profits that companies that don’t contribute. The controversial SupremeCourt Citizens United decision has released a flood of campaign cash into the political process. He said the study shows that better-run and more profitable companies refuse to make political contributions. The study finds no evidence that shareholders benefit from corporate political donations, he said.
