OTTAWA – On Saturday from 10 to 2, you can drop off old and unwanted prescription drugs in boxes in the front lobby of the Ottawa Police Department at Second and Beech and no questions asked. Ottawa police Lt. Adam Weingartner said the effort is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. “Unused or expired prescriptions are a public safety issue due to the possibility of accidental poisoning, overdose, or abuse,” he said. “Prescription drug abuse is a fast growing trend in drug abuse problems in our community.” Take Back Day is the third such annual event in Ottawa and Weingartner said it’s been successful that it will continue to be an annual event as long as the DEA continues it. You should remove any personal information from the labels, he said. An officer will be present only to ensure the dropped-off drugs stay in the drop boxes, he said.
