OTTAWA – If you need to register a vehicle after May 1, it may not be so easy to roll. The Franklin County Treasurer’s vehicle registration office will be closed for about a week beginning Tuesday. County Treasurer Debbie Hough says the closure is a statewide closure as the state phases in a new computer system that tracks vehicle tags and titles, and driver’s licenses and other IDs. The Kansas Department of Revenue is introducing the new system to replace three aging computer systems used for driver licenses, motor vehicle titles and registration, and inventory management. The change will take place in two phases. The second phase will be later this year, and involves driver licensesgand other state-issued identification cards and permits. If you need to update a tag you should stop by Monday, she said. However, other functions of the county treasurer’s office will remain open next week. She said you’ll still have to pay personal property taxes if they’re due. The shutdown affects the Ottawa driver’s license station. Because the Anderson County treasurer also handles drivers licenses, no licenses or IDs will be available during the shutdown.
