NASHVILLE — Country star and Wellsville native Chely Wright applauded President Obama’s announcement on ABC News in support of gay marriage. It’s an historic moment in American history and Obama has made a bold statement about leadership and equality, said Wright, who is married to another woman. “His statement will have a profound effect on the lives of LGBT Americans, young and old,” she said. “President Obama’s powerful words will echo all over the nation – galvanizing the message that all Americans deserve dignity and that their equality matters.” The statement isn’t just for gay people, it’s about human rights for everyone, she said. Wright came out of the closet about being a lesbian and has published her memoir entitled “Like Me” about growing up in Wellsville and her struggle in Nashville coming out. She has created the Kansas City’s “LIKEME Lighthouse,” located in the heart of Kansas City, the Lighthouse comes fully equipped with resources, staff, counselors and a sense of community and safety. Within the Lighthouse, the Community Center provides resources on such topics as the coming out process, gender identity, bullying and other issues the LGBT community faces. She is also the subject of First Run Features award-winning documentary, “Wish Me Away,” which tracks three years during the country music star’s struggle to come out publicly. She is a prominent spokeswoman for LGBT equality. She said after her own announcements about her status, she heard mostly silence in Nashville. She said the silence about Obama’s announcement has also been silent, something she called disappointing.
