GARNETT — A decision by Anderson County farmers to plant wheat may be coming up roses this year, including the thorns. The Anderson County Review reporteds that farmers planted very little wheat prior to last year but planted a lot for this year. Generally farmers prefer corn and soybeans and plant wheat as a rotation crop, Anderson County Extension agent Shannon Blocker said. This was the year scheduled for rotation and that’s why there is so much wheat in Anderson County this year, she said. The crop has had perfect weather and rain patterns. However, Blocker saID a wheat virus has infected much of the county’s wheat crop. There’s little that can be done to deal with it, she said. The wheat harvest will have decreased yields because of the virus but should still be fairly decent, she said.
