OTTAWA – ECKAN’s popular summertime free lunch period is back for the 15th straight summer. The Lunch Bunch provides free lunches for any children living in the Ottawa school district from ages 1 to 18 at the Don Woodward Community Center. The program begins May 29 and will go through July 27, from noon to 12:30 each weekday. This year, ECKAN will give children free backpacks containing lunches for Saturday and Sunday, on a first-come, first-serve basis. The backpacks will be distributed after lunches on Thursdays. The program is designed to ensure children receive adequate nutrition during the summer months when school lunches are not available and children are sometimes caring for themselves while their parents work, ECKAN CEO Richard Jackson said.
