TOPEKA — Drivers have received a month’s extension to renew their vehicle tags after the state’s new vehicle title and registration system crashed this week. Phasing in the new computer program has been trouble-plagued, causing crashes and slowdowns. The Division of Vehicles said it appears the system is back up and running after it collapsed Monday. However, the state revenue department is giving drivers a month’s grace period because of the snafus. Vehicle tags which expired April 30 will be granted a grace period through the end of this month. Those tags are for those with last names starting with C and D. Vehicle tags which expire May 31 will be granted a grace period through June 29. Those are last names starting with E, F or G. Thirty-day permits that expired this month will have a grace period through June 29.
