KANSAS CITY — Three federal judges begin hearings this morning in Kansas City on redrawing Kansas Congressional districts. State board of education, state senate and state representative districts follow. The Kansas Legislature, torn by a dispute between conservative Republicans and moderate Republicans, was the only legislature in the U.S. that failed to redraw districts because of population changes. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports more than 30 lawyers will be involved in the case. Legislative Republican conservatives and Gov. Sam Brownback have made no secret they wanted to redraw legislative boundary lines to wipe out moderate Republicans and Democrats, who pushed back. Kansas University political science professor Burdett Lloomis told the Capital-Journal that the judges won’t tolerate much nonsense in a situation that has been driven by nonsense. Thirty-three lawyers is the beginning of a joke, he said, but he isn’t sure what the punchline is.
