GARNETT — City and county officials continue to work on a plan that would organize a number of public storm shelters in Garnett and in Anderson County. City public safety director Pat Tate has been contacting local churches with the intent of locating possible storm shelters, Garnett city manager Joyce Martin said. In some cases, church ministers are checking with their insurance carriers concerning liability for being a shelter, she said. The Anderson County Review reported that storm shelters have been a concern this year at several meetings including a recent joint meeting of city, county, hospital and school officials. County emergency management director Marvin Grimes said he’s looking at setting up shelters at rural fire departments and other locations including the courthouse and Anderson County Hospital in Garnett.
