TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a public health advisory for the Arkansas River because of elevated levels of bacteria.
The KDHE said lab samples of the stream showed the contamination and says it has also confirmed a report of a fish-kill in the Arkansas River in areas where there is black, smelly water. The cause has not been identified. The advisory covers the Arkansas River from central Wichita to the Oklahoma state line. The KDHE warns people against having contact with river water until further notice. People should also keep their pets and livestock from making contact with the water
