RICHMOND — The area wheat harvest is under way and to a scorching start. That this year, area farmers have planted a lot of wheat, said Ralph Ferguson, of the Beachner Grain’s elevator in Richmond. Although it’s still early to discuss average trends, the quality of the wheat is good and some fields have showed bushels-per-acre yields in the upper 50s and lower 60s, which is unusually good for the area, he said. Because of the unusually warm winter and spring, the harvest started about three to four weeks early. “In all my years — and that’s a bunch of them – I’ve never dumped wheat in May,” Ferguson said.
