BALDWIN CITY — Merle Venable, who was called the most winning coach in Kansas while he was at Baldwin High School, died Thursday at the age of 77 in Leavenworth.
He coached Baldwin football teams to a state 4-A championship in 1981, and to second-places at state, and track teams to two second-place finishes at state. He was a long-time teacher and coach who also taught at Ottawa, Yates Center, Turner, and at B & B Baileyville. His funeral services will be Tuesday afternoon at 3 at the Baldwin City First United Methodist Church.
