OTTAWA — A cooking fire spread light smoke throughout a house in the 600 block of North Main Street Monday night. Ottawa Fire Chief Jeff Carner said an unattended cooking fire was contained to the stove area in the kitchen. Other areas of the home sustained light smoke damage, he said. The occupants were home at the time of the incident and escaped without injury. There were smoke detectors but they weren’t operating because of missing batteries, he said. Firefighters installed more detectors before they left.
