MINE CREEK — The Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site will present “Turning Points: Mine cCreek, the Election of 1864 and Hope For the Union,” Saturday afternoon from 1 to 2:30. 1864 was a crucial year for the Union, and was the first American presidential election held during wartime. The program’s focus will be on how the Confederate invasion of Missouri, which disintegrated at Mine Creek, and the stalemate in Virginia affected the Union cause and Abraham Lincoln’s chances of re-election. Admission to Mine Creek is $5 for adults, $1 for students. Kansas Historical Foundation members and children five and under are admitted free.
