LAWRENCE — Lawrence is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the present Liberty Hall at Seventh and Massachusetts streets on the north end of the city’s downtown. The Lawrence Journal-World notes that the historic Beaux-Arts-style opera house has had a long connection with Lawrence’s cultural activities. The building has served as a vaudeville and opera house, a movie theater, a concert venue, a discoteque, charity socials, Kansas University events and even as a warehouse. Liberty Hall even served as funeral parlor for Beat Generation icon and author William S. Burroughs. It is owned by David and Susan Millstein, Baldwin City, who with the late Charlie Oldfather, bought the building, which was threatened with demolition, in 1985 and restored it. Now, Liberty Hall serves as movie theater, performance theater, concert venue and community event space.
