WICHITA — Officials from three United Methodist Church conferences are working to combine themselves into one. Members of the Kansas West, Kansas East and Nebraska United Methodist conferences voted earlier this month to merge the three conferences into one, beginning in January 2014. A new bishop for the combined Kansas-Nebraska Conference will be elected in late July. The new bishop will live in Wichita, but the church will keep headquarters in Topeka and in Lincoln, Neb. Methodist conferences are regional bodies that supervise churches and clergy within a geographic area.
