TOPEKA — Westar Energy is sending 41 linemen and other personnel to help restore power after a monster series of thunderstorms hundreds of miles wide and packing winds of 90 miles an hour smashed into the Mid-Atlantic area Friday night. The storms destroyed much of the East Coast power grid and left millions in seven states and the District of Columbia without electricity. More severe storms lashed many of the areas again Sunday night. With forecasters predicting record-breaking triple-digit temperatures for the East Coast, authorities say it will take a week to restore power. The executive in charge of one suburban county outside Washington, D.C., told ABC News that it’s unacceptable for the power companies to take a week to restore service. The Westar crews will help American Electric Power in West Virginia restore power to about 349,000 customers. They plan to stay in West Virginia at least through the Fourth of July.
