OTTAWA — Beginning today at noon, the Franklin County Historical Society will offer a month-long weekly series on “101 Things You Should Know About Caring For Your Family Treasures” in the school room at the Old Depot Museum. Today’s program will focus on preserving paper artifacts — books, documents, scrapbooks, and photos, and the importance of acid-free storage, said Deborah Barker, Franklin County Historical Society director. Each hour-long session will include a presentation with the society’s artifacts used to illustrate the advice, she said. Participants will receive checklists to bring home on each week’s subject, she said. There is no cost beyond the admission price to the museum. Members of the Franklin County History Society get into the museum for free. People should bring a sack lunch. July 10 will cover artworks, frames, paintings and fabrics. On July 17, the topics will be conserving ceramics, glass and silver. July 24 will examine musical instruments, militaria and toys. The final session on July 31 will address security, insurance, appraisals, cleaning, display and storage.
