OSAWATOMIE — The city of Osawatomie says it hasn’t banned the sales and shooting of fireworks. The city said it has received many questions about fireworks being allowed because of dry conditions. City officials say they could consider a ban if Miami County issues a burn ban. The weather service has issued an advisory of elevated fire danger in Miami and Linn counties, but so far, only that part of northeastern Miami County covered by Johnson County Fire District No. 2 has issued a burn ban, as of this afternoon. Instead, the city of Osawatomie asks all citizens to use extra caution when using fireworks through July 4th and to make sure water or a fire extinguisher is available at all times. The city also reminds all citizens that fireworks are prohibited on all public property, which includes all streets, parks, school grounds, or any property not privately owned. The situation is monitored daily, Osawatomie Fire Chief Duwayne Tewes said. There has been no increase in the number of fires in the county due to fireworks, he said.
