OTTAWA – An Arizona prison inmate convicted of kidnapping and sex crimes will get a new trial in Franklin County District Court August  22.  A mistrial has been declared in the case of Ralph Corey because jurors deliberating Corey’s fate used a Smart Phone to do some additional research on the 12-year-old case during their deliberations.  County Attorney Stephen Hunting says jurors must deliberate on the evidence and testimony presented during a trial and using outside sources is forbidden.  Hunting says under the law, the judge had little choice but to grant defense attorney John Boyd’s motion for a new trial.

Such mistrials are rare but when they occur, the cases must be redone, Hunting said.  Corey was convicted of kidnapping, attempted rape and two counts of aggravated seuxual battery involving a Williamsburg teenager 12 years ago.
